Explaining and predicting these differences is not easy and scientists have studied farmed perch to try and solve the problem. It was found that some individual fish were much better competitors than their brothers and sisters when it came to obtaining a meal.

The feeding success of young perch in aquaria and their growth rates were consistent, in other words the same particular fish always did well. Some individuals may do better in certain environments because of their genetic make-up, but this was not tested.

The fish that managed to get the most food proved to be those that were boldest and least easily scared and presumably easiest to catch. For fish feeding in the same tank, not surprisingly, those that ate the most grew quickest. The size and composition of the shoal in which the perch happened to be living affected individual boldness but again it did not influence the amount of food that they ate. In short there was a large variation in boldness and competitive ability of different perch and this could be one of the reasons for the big differences in growth.

There seems to be some interesting parallels between the perch research and that on other species which indicate that the largest fish are those with the lowest metabolic rates. All in all this is an excellent summary of how perch diets change throughout the year.

Hopefully it will give you some ideas as to how to modify your tactics to be more successful year round. Wildlife artist David Miller is best known for his stunning underwater paintings of game, coarse and marine fish, having had his work featured on the UK rod licence and a specially commissioned set of Royal Mail stamps. Fathead minnows make up the bulk of their minnow-based diet but other species like mosquitofish, chubs, shiners, and smelt are regularly eaten as well. Even small yellow perch will occasionally eat minnows. Yellow perch are omnivorous fish who feed on vegetation, zooplankton, aquatic invertebrates, and fish.

Young perch feed mostly on plankton, vegetation, and insects. Once a yellow perch reaches maturity, their diet shifts to be mostly insects and fish. Of all the species of baitfish yellow perch consume, golden shiners and fathead minnows make up the majority. Perch have relatively small mouths so the body-design of fathead minnows, in particular, make them the ideal food.

If you are looking for live bait to catch truly large perch, fathead minnows are probably your best choice. Minnows are available at many bait shops, easy to catch, pretty hardy, and will attract the attention of not only big yellow perch but a whole range of hungry game fish. I recommend getting a lightweight spinning rod for yellow perch fishing.

Whether you are fishing with live bait or lures, you want a lightweight rod with fast action and plenty of casting range. I recommend this spinning combo available at Amazon because it is ideal for perch and other panfish, has great action, and has earned great reviews. I own this rod and really like it. Perch start out their lives eating mostly plankton and small insects. As they age and grow, their diets shift strongly towards bigger insects, shrimp, and fish.

Of all the baitfish perch eat, fathead minnows and golden shiners make up the large bulk of their diets. Fathead minnows have been stocked in just about every major lake and reservoir in this country meaning most yellow perch have ready access to them. The lower fins often glow with vivid orange intensity, like heated metal, particularly on spawning males. They're a great looking species.

They are close relatives of two other delicious fish — the walleye and sauger — and lakes where jumbo perch can be caught frequently attract numerous anglers hoping to catch these scrappy fighters for supper. Yellow perch are very adaptable, adjusting to a wide variety of water conditions in lakes, ponds and streams.

They are most common, however, in large, deep, clear lakes with sand, gravel or rock bottoms and modest amounts of vegetation. The best perch fishing tends to be in waters across the northern half of the contiguous 48 states and throughout much of Canada, with the exception of British Columbia.

The Great Lakes other than Lake Superior are favored destinations for many perch fans, as are many of the larger natural lakes in New England and the upper Midwest. Minnows are the bait of choice in some regions, while leeches and redworms get the nod in others. Lures also nab these delicious panfish, with small jigs, spinners and jigging spoons topping the favorites list.
