They're into hanging out with friends, pretty girls and the Motown sounds so popular during the era. Each wants to make it big in his own way, but not everybody they meet is looking out for them, as they learn when a seemingly harmless outing goes awry.

With such touches — and especially in a scene in which Preach and Cochise take a joyride in a stolen car and are chased by police — the movie emphasizes the thin line that exists between a life of promise and a life of prison or worse, death for kids growing up in a neighborhood like this. Cooley High balances youthful optimism and adult reality in a way that makes it a precursor to the likes of Boyz N the Hood and Stand By Me.

They are both extraordinary. Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs is amazing. So he made a deal with Krantz. He would work with Monte for a month to get the script into shape. Schultz had worked with Turman in the New York theater. They kind of talked to me. We felt like we were really these teenagers even though none of us were teenagers.

There was no Hollywoodness about it. I worked with a lot of directors, and I can honestly say the two most outstanding I worked with are Sidney Poitier and Michael Schultz. I think it had a great impact in terms of allowing African Americans to see our films in a very positive way in terms of how they handled the violence. They showed us just being who we were. Hilton-Jacobs said the character of Cochise and the film itself were an extension of how he grew up in New York.
