Their most recent album was 's For the Many. Let's just say there's no love lost between the Campbell brothers in recent years.
He was particularly critical of his brother Duncan's voice, saying: "I sat back for five years and watched my brother Duncan murdering my songs. We're saving the legacy. When Duncan was hospitalised in after a stroke , Ali said he hadn't spoken to him. When asked on Good Morning Britain if he thought "this might be a chance to patch things up", Ali replied: "Not really.
I have no contact with him. Later in his GMB interview, Ali told the hosts he has no interest in getting the original group back together. He said: "I was betrayed by them. I stand vindicated. Along with older brother David, the four brothers are the sons of the late folk singer Ian Campbell, who died in He spent five years performing under his own name.
He never owned the name. We all started the band together. We were a democratic band that he chose to leave. We never split up. However, the Kampala gig — before 35, cheering fans — was their last with singer Ali Campbell.
I was just too angry. We spent the next five years proving to everybody that we could still be UB Today, as a result, there are two bands with UB40 in their name. There is UB40, down to five of the original eight members, who have replaced Ali with another Campbell brother, Duncan. Robin and Ali have both been been declared bankrupt. UB40 are not the only band divided into competing factions.
His brother was a ragamuffin, Robin a librarian. What did for UB40 was the age-old problem of money. In the 80s and 90s, as a stadium act, UB40 seemed to have struck pop gold. I was 14 and was given all the unpleasant jobs to do. I had to get elbow deep in a vat of warm blood to find the neck of pig, so I could get at the innards. It was disgusting. Have you ever struggled to make ends meet? I have definitely been in the position where I cannot see how I am going to pay the next bill or where my next meal is going to come from.
The worst time was ten years ago, when we lost our lead singer Ali Campbell in an acrimonious split. Suddenly, everything was up in the air. We had booked all these tours and we had services to pay for and advances for buses, hotels, flights and trucking. Touring is a really expensive business and when people have a contract, they expect to be paid. We owed all this money for tours we could not perform.
As a result of that, we went bankrupt. That was quite a shocking experience and one I would not wish on anybody. One minute you are living normally and the next everything is taken away: property, cars, furniture, everything.
It happened to everyone in the band. They even took our musical instruments — so our ability to earn, which seemed mercenary and pointless. As it turned out, my home was not repossessed, but other band members did have their property repossessed.
We even had to sell our back catalogue. We no longer get any royalties from our own music. We took quite a battering. Nowadays we make a living as a working band, touring venues and playing.
We have replaced Ali with his brother Duncan. It has been hard work and it took a few years, but we are in a good place now. What was the best year of your financial life? The early s was when we had the most money coming in to the band. It was ridiculous. It became our biggest selling album. I cannot remember exactly how much I personally earned that year but it would have been a couple of million pounds. What is the most expensive thing you bought for fun?
It was an absolutely gorgeous machine: one of my possessions that got repossessed. What is your biggest money mistake? Investing in a friend's restaurant. On the positive side, mistakes like that weed out the people you can and cannot trust. It is just an expensive lesson to learn. The best money decision you have made? Buying my own home 17 years ago. I live in a beautiful s four-bed house with two-thirds of an acre of land.
It is really private — we have about a hundred pine trees — out in the green belt, just outside of Birmingham. Do you save in a pension or invest in the stock market?
